Computer Not Turning On? Try These 7 Steps Before Calling for Repair

A working diagnostic checklist for KL & PJ users when a desktop or laptop won't power on. Most issues fix in under 15 minutes.

You press the power button. Nothing. Or the fans spin briefly and then die. Or there’s a beep, but no display. Before you bring the machine to a shop in Petaling Jaya or call us out for a service call, work through this checklist. Most “dead” computers we see in the field are actually one cable, one stick of RAM, or one button-cell battery away from working.

This is written for KL & Selangor users on real-world hardware — Lenovo and Dell laptops, white-box desktops from Low Yat, plus the occasional MacBook. The order matters: the cheapest, fastest checks come first.

Before you start: rule out the obvious

Two things to confirm out loud before touching anything:

  • The wall socket actually has power. Try a lamp or phone charger in the same socket. KL apartments sometimes trip a single MCB, leaving one room dead.
  • The right power button. On all-in-ones and some Lenovo desktops, the front “power” lights are decorative; the real switch is on the back. On some monitors the button is on the underside.

Step 1: check the power LED and listen

Press the button and watch closely.

  • No LED, no fan, no sound — power is not reaching the motherboard. Move to step 2 (PSU/charger) and step 3 (CMOS).
  • LED on, fan spins, but screen is black — power is fine. Skip to step 5 (display) and step 6 (RAM).
  • Repeated short beeps or long beeps — the BIOS is telling you something. Note the pattern. On most boards: 1 long + 2 short = video card; continuous = RAM; no beep but spins = CPU or PSU. Move to step 6.

This single observation rules out half the diagnostic tree.

Step 2: power supply / charger

For laptops:

  1. Confirm the charger LED is on when plugged into the wall. If your charger has no LED, plug it into the laptop and feel the brick — a working brick gets warm within 30 seconds under load.
  2. Borrow a charger from a friend or housemate with the same connector. A dead charger looks identical to a dead laptop.
  3. Check the charger pin and laptop port for burn marks — a black ring or a wobbly pin means the port is fried. Stop charging immediately; this is a soldering job.

For desktops:

  1. The PSU power switch on the back (the I/O rocker) — make sure it’s on I.
  2. Reseat the 24-pin and 4/8-pin CPU power connectors. A loose CPU power cable is the #1 cause of “spins but no boot” we see on builds from Low Yat.
  3. Paperclip test for a bare PSU: short the green wire to any black wire on the 24-pin connector. The fan should spin. If it doesn’t even spin alone, the PSU is dead.

Step 3: drain residual power (the magic trick)

This fixes maybe 20% of “completely dead” laptops.

  1. Unplug the charger.
  2. Remove the battery if it’s removable. If not, skip to step 3.
  3. Hold the power button for 30–60 seconds. This drains the capacitors on the motherboard.
  4. Plug the charger back in. Try to power on without the battery first.

If it now boots, your battery may be dead, or the machine just needed a hard reset.

Step 4: clear the CMOS

The CMOS battery (the silver coin-size CR2032 on the motherboard) keeps BIOS settings alive. When it dies — usually after 4–6 years — desktops behave erratically: won’t post, hangs at the logo, time resets to 2010.

For desktops:

  1. Power off, unplug, open the side panel.
  2. Find the coin battery. Note which side faces up.
  3. Pop it out with a flathead screwdriver. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Put it back. (If you have a multimeter, check it first — anything below 2.8V means replace it. CR2032s cost RM 3 at any 99 mart.)
  5. Some boards have a “CLR_CMOS” jumper instead — short pins 1 and 2 for 5 seconds.

For laptops the CMOS battery is buried, so this is normally a workshop-level job.

Step 5: display sanity check

You’re past power. The board is alive but the screen is black.

For laptops:

  • Shine a flashlight at the screen at an angle. If you see a faint Windows logo, the panel is fine but the backlight is dead — that’s a screen replacement, not a logic issue.
  • Plug into an external monitor via HDMI. If external works, the panel or LVDS cable is the problem.

For desktops:

  • Confirm the cable goes to the GPU, not the motherboard’s video port (if you have a discrete GPU, the iGPU output is usually disabled).
  • Try a different cable. HDMI cables fail more than people think.
  • Try a different monitor. Sometimes the monitor’s input source is set wrong and you’ve been blaming the PC for a week.

Step 6: reseat RAM and check for one stick at a time

The single most common fix at our workbench.

  1. Power off, unplug.
  2. Open the case. Press the clips on either side of each RAM stick to release.
  3. Pull the sticks fully out. Inspect the gold contacts — any green oxidation in the KL humid season needs a soft pencil eraser rub.
  4. Reseat firmly. A click on each side. Half-seated RAM is the second most common service call we get.
  5. Boot with one stick in slot A1 only. If it boots, swap to the other stick. If one stick boots and the other doesn’t, you found the dead one.

If the system beeps continuously or short-short-short, that’s the BIOS confirming RAM is the issue.

Step 7: if it’s still dead

You’ve eliminated power, charger, residual current, CMOS, display, and RAM. Remaining suspects:

  • Motherboard — capacitor failure, blown VRM. Visible: bulging or leaking caps.
  • CPU — extremely rare. Usually a board issue dragging the CPU down.
  • GPU — for desktops, try without the discrete GPU first.
  • Storage — won’t typically prevent power-on, but a failing SSD can hang at the BIOS screen.

This is the point where DIY stops being economical. A motherboard swap on a 5-year-old laptop often costs more than a refurbished one. We’ll tell you honestly if it’s worth fixing or not.

Why does my laptop turn on for 2 seconds and shut off?

Almost always overheating protection or a failing battery. The board sees an over-current event and cuts power. Try with the battery removed and only the charger plugged in. If it stays on, the battery is failing.

Is it worth repairing a 5-year-old laptop?

Depends on the part. RAM, SSD, battery, charger — yes, almost always. Motherboard, screen on a low-end machine, CPU — usually not. We give a quote first; you decide.
