The honest answer to “how much does a website cost in Malaysia?” is: it depends, but here are the actual numbers in 2026, by what you’re trying to do.

We’ve quoted hundreds of these. The number changes based on what you actually need, not on how big the agency answering you is. This article gives you the real ranges, what’s behind each one, and how to spot when someone is overcharging.

TL;DR — the four real bands

NeedRealistic 2026 priceBuild time
Simple brochure (1–5 pages, contact form)RM 1,500 – 4,0001–2 weeks
Marketing site (10–20 pages, blog, multilingual, SEO)RM 5,000 – 15,0003–6 weeks
Custom site with logged-in features (dashboard, bookings, CMS)RM 15,000 – 40,0006–12 weeks
E-commerce (catalog, payment, FPX, shipping integration)RM 12,000 – 35,0004–10 weeks

Anything outside these ranges is either a freelancer underpricing themselves (risky) or an agency hiding markup (waste). Both happen weekly in KL.

What you actually pay for

A website’s price isn’t really “the website.” It’s:

  1. Discovery & scoping — figuring out what you actually need, vs what you said you needed. About 10% of the budget.
  2. Design — wireframes, brand alignment, mockups. 15–25%.
  3. Development — code that turns design into a real site. 35–50%.
  4. Content & migration — writing, photos, moving from old site. 10–15%. Most clients underestimate this.
  5. SEO setup — schema, sitemap, hreflang, search console. 5–10% if done right at the start; 30%+ if bolted on later.
  6. Hosting & deployment — usually one-time setup of a few hours, then RM 30–100/month.

When agencies quote RM 50k for a brochure site, they’re charging you for project managers, sales people, and an office in Bangsar. When a freelancer quotes RM 800, they’re skipping discovery, SEO, and content migration — and you’ll pay for it later.

Band 1: simple brochure (RM 1.5k – 4k)

Use case: small business that needs a presence — a clinic, a contractor, a restaurant. Five-page site at most.

What’s included:

  • Home, About, Services, Contact, one extra (e.g. menu, gallery)
  • Mobile-friendly, fast (Lighthouse 90+)
  • Contact form with WhatsApp link
  • Basic SEO (titles, meta, sitemap)
  • One language

What’s NOT typically included:

  • Multi-language
  • Blog/CMS
  • Custom imagery (you provide photos)
  • Analytics setup beyond basic GA4

Hosting: RM 30–80/month on shared hosting (cPanel) or free tier on Cloudflare Pages.

If you only need a sign-on-the-internet, this is enough. We’ve shipped these in 7 working days for clinics in PJ.

Band 2: marketing site (RM 5k – 15k)

Use case: business that wants the site to actually drive leads. Tradesmen who want to rank on Google. A studio’s portfolio. A multi-branch shop.

What’s included beyond Band 1:

  • 10–20 pages, including service pages tuned for SEO
  • Multilingual (EN + 中文 + BM, with hreflang)
  • Blog/CMS so you can publish without us
  • Schema markup (LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Service)
  • Search Console + Bing Webmaster registration
  • Analytics + basic conversion tracking
  • WhatsApp integration with prefilled messages
  • Performance budget enforced (Core Web Vitals all green)

What changes the price within the band:

  • Number of services / locations
  • How much content you have ready vs we write
  • Custom illustrations or stock-only

This is what 80% of small KL businesses actually need. The site you’re reading this on is a Band 2 build.

Band 3: custom features (RM 15k – 40k)

Use case: site has logged-in users, dashboards, bookings, members, custom workflow.

Examples we’ve built:

  • Tuition centre with parent login + class schedule + payment record
  • Wedding planner with quote calculator + vendor matchmaking
  • Property agent with saved-listings dashboard

What drives cost:

  • Number of distinct user roles (admin/staff/customer)
  • Integrations (Stripe, Billplz, FPX, Twilio, WhatsApp Cloud API)
  • Custom CMS for non-technical editors
  • Mobile responsiveness of authenticated areas
  • Database design and migrations

The line between “website” and “web app” gets blurry here. If you have features users do (not just read), expect to be in this band. If you’ve been quoted RM 5k for “a booking website,” it’ll either be over-budget by 4x or use a SaaS like Calendly with a website wrapper.

For the dedicated breakdown of this work, see custom software development in Malaysia.

Band 4: e-commerce (RM 12k – 35k)

This band is wider than people think because the spread within it is huge.

Lower end (RM 12k–18k): Shopify or WooCommerce setup with theme customisation, FPX/Stripe, basic shipping rates, ~50 products migrated.

Middle (RM 18k–25k): Custom design on top of Shopify/Woo, multilingual catalog, complex shipping rules, ERP/POS sync.

Upper (RM 25k–35k+): Headless commerce, custom checkout, multiple warehouses, marketplace mode, B2B pricing tiers.

Reality check: if your store does under RM 30k/month online, Shopify or Woo on the lower band is right. Bespoke commerce platforms only earn back the money at scale.

Hidden costs nobody quotes

These are real, and they get tucked under the carpet:

  • Domain & SSL: RM 50–80/year for the domain. SSL is free via Let’s Encrypt.
  • Email: RM 20–60/month for Google Workspace or Zoho Mail per address.
  • Stock photography: RM 100–500 per image if not bundled.
  • Copywriting: RM 200–1000 per page if you don’t write it yourself.
  • Translations: RM 0.10–0.40 per word per target language. A 10-page site is ~3,000 words = RM 300–1,200 per language.
  • Ongoing maintenance: RM 100–500/month if you want patches, backups, plugin updates.
  • Featured ad spend: if you want to actually rank fast, RM 500–2,000/month on Google Ads while SEO catches up.

A “RM 3,000” website often becomes RM 5,500 once these are included. Reputable studios show all of this up front; cheap ones reveal it after the deposit.

What we charge, and why

We’re a one-person studio. Our prices land at the middle-low end of each band because:

  • No account managers or sales team to fund
  • Fixed quotes, milestone payments — you don’t pay for our risk-padding
  • Source code goes to your GitHub from day 1, no lock-in
  • We push back when something isn’t worth building

A typical small business marketing site (Band 2) with multilingual + blog + good SEO runs RM 6,000 – 9,000 from us, deliverable in 4–5 weeks. We can’t take ten of those a month — we take three, and we ship them properly.

If you’re shopping quotes, WhatsApp us a brief — even one paragraph. We’ll send back a fixed quote within a day, with itemised costs. You can compare apples-to-apples against agencies.

Frequently asked

Why is the difference between a RM 800 freelance site and a RM 8,000 studio site?

Real cost difference: SEO done at the start, mobile/responsive that actually works, code that you own, multilingual, schema markup, sitemap, fast hosting, and someone who answers a year from now. A RM 800 site usually has none of those.

Should I use Wix or Squarespace?

For a “good enough” five-page brochure with no SEO ambition: yes, RM 60–120/month is fine. The moment you want to rank, customise, or integrate, the platform fights you and the migration cost erases the savings.

How long does a website take?

Brochure: 1–2 weeks. Marketing site: 3–6 weeks. Custom features: 6–12 weeks. We give a written timeline before invoice 1.

Do you also do hosting?

We deploy to your account (Cloudflare, your cPanel, your AWS — your choice). We don’t resell hosting. That keeps you in control and stops the quarterly hostage-taking some agencies do.

What happens if I want to switch developers later?

Source code is yours from day 1, in your GitHub. Hosting is in your account. Fonts and assets are licensed under your name. Switching costs you a handover meeting, nothing more.
